I know there are only a couple of days left until Christmas, but in case you are still searching for a simple handmade gift idea for someone on your list, I have just the ticket! Today’s post is a practical idea and a simple, last minute Christmas gift idea all rolled into one!
This is the second post I’ve done about hanging dish towels…which shows how passionate I am about the subject. The first post I did was about a year and a half ago and was the result of one of my pet peeves….dish towels that I hang on the oven door that inevitably end up on the floor!
While I still like the IDEA of the original hanging towel idea…I’ll admit it wasn’t the most ATTRACTIVE option. So when my neighbor Cathy brought me over one that she had made, I was inspired to try an updated version. Version 2.0.
Here is the towel that Cathy made. It’s nice and Christmasey and she used a pretty cotton print. I, however, am not as talented a seamstress as Cathy, so I immediately started thinking about how I could make a more simple version.
This is what I came up with:
Cut two lengths of the thin ribbon the same length as the wide ribbon PLUS 8 inches.
Sew the first piece of wide ribbon along both long ends, approximately 4 inches down from the top of the towel. Fold the ends of the ribbon under as you sew.
Sew the second piece of wide ribbon approximately 4 inches down from the top piece of ribbon, in the same manner.
Attach a safety pin to the end of one of the thin pieces of ribbon and thread it through the opening of the wide ribbon from one side to the other. Repeat for second wide ribbon.
Gather the towel together until it’s approximately half as wide, then sew the thin ribbon and the opening of the wide ribbon closed. Repeat for second ribbon.
Now drape your towel over the oven door handle and tie the thin ribbons on each side together.
Now that you have the kinks worked out of making one…try making another one to match the first one….or try another color of ribbon like I did.
I actually had a lot of fun making these! They are quick and easy…..you can customize them to match your decor….and they make life in the kitchen just a little bit easier.
